:star:Manga/Anime Spotlight: KurgenLagann:star:

Manga/Anime Spotlight is a weekly feature that highlights the different artists across the deviantART's Manga/Anime community, and is a portal to get to know a bit more about them and their works.

This week's feature is KurgenLagann

:bulletgreen:1.) To start off, what is your favorite medium and tools to use?

As much as I like doing digital work, my favorite medium to work with is watercolor. I don't have to worry about being as precise as with digital work, it's considerably faster, and feels a lot more free and fun.

:bulletgreen:2.) When you draw, do you plan everything out first, or do you just see where the drawing takes you?

A little bit of both. I usually have a plan of what I want to draw, but while drawing it, some parts can turn out differently than I had initially imagined, so I kind of run with it!

:bulletgreen:3.) On average, how long do you spend on a drawing?

If it's a digital (sketched and colored in Photoshop) work, I'd say between 6-8 hours, and that's fully outlined and colored.  Watercolors take maybe 1 or 2 hours at the most.  It also depends on the complexity of the artwork (how many characters are in the picture, the type of background, etc)

:bulletgreen:4.) When did you first start drawing, and what made you start to draw in the manga/anime style?

I've been drawing since I can remember - when I was a kid, I'd draw and do little doodles and stuff all the time and not care how they turned out as long as I was having fun.  I drew a lot of Nickelodeon characters (like the characters from Hey Arnold! and The Wild Thornberries) and Powerpuff Girls because that was what I was into before I was exposed to anime. :XD: I was in my teens when I started drawing anime fanart and anime-inspired characters, and that was around the time when I started seriously watching and getting into anime. Seeing the unique character styles in anime made me want to attempt drawing them for myself.

:bulletgreen:5.) What are your inspirations for drawing?

A lot of my friends also draw, and that really inspires me to keep at it. Also, artists that I watch here on DA who draw amazingly kind of push me to try different styles and improve.  I think Elegance in general inspires me a lot, since I gravitate towards pretty and elegant things, and I want to reflect that sense of aesthetics in my work.

:bulletgreen:6.) Do you have any artists that you look up to?

Yes, there are a few.  I honestly look up to my good friend (and my roommate during my entire 4 years of college) :iconsakura02: a great deal. She's very hard-working and draws A LOT.  I really love :iconmeago:'s style, and :iconluleiya:'s epic work with markers, and :iconsilvertales: has stunning work that's very elegant.  I'm sure there are others that I'm missing, but those are the artists that come to mind right away.

:bulletgreen:7.) Out of the works in your gallery, what are your five favorite pieces?

Fly Away Now by KurgenLagann   Into the Night, Into the Wind by KurgenLagann   Twins by KurgenLagann

Mature Content

Late Night Games by KurgenLagann
  Sorrow by KurgenLagann

:bulletgreen:8.) Do you have any tips for young aspiring artists?

Give it time, and be patient with your work. You won't be amazing right off the bat, unless you're a prodigy. :XD: Try to draw consistently, and take note of your strengths and weaknesses, and your progression. It took me years until I started being happy about my works, and even now it varies from piece to piece.

:bulletgreen:9.) Are there any other types of art that enjoy?

Yes! I love cosplay - I'm an active cosplayer, I make my own costumes, and I love to see other cosplayers' works and admire it as an art form.  I also love traditional painting, and looking at historical pieces of art, especially from the Baroque, Rococco, and Impressionist periods.

:bulletgreen:10.) Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Although I haven't had time for drawing anything new lately, it's still something I enjoy and won't rule out doing entirely. I've been concentrating more on my career, and on cosplay in my free-time lately, but I'm not done drawing. I enjoy it too much to give it up entirely, and hopefully when I have more time I can start drawing something new, and improving.
