Manga/Anime Spotlight: Hiiragi-san
Manga/Anime Spotlight is a weekly feature that highlights the different artists across the deviantART's Manga/Anime community, and is a portal to get to know a bit more about them and their works.
This week's feature is Hiiragi-san
1.) To start off, what is your favorite medium and tools to use?
Digital media is my favorite. It allows me to be as neat and precise as I want to be, plus I can easily undo my mistakes with just a few keystrokes And even though all the cool kids use Paint Tool SAI nowadays, I'm a committed Photoshop user.
2.) When you draw, do you plan everything out first, or do you just see where the drawing takes you?
I plan it all out first. Usually I will make a quick doodle so I can better visualize my idea, map out a character's proportions, try out different poses, etc. Once I am happy with all that, I put my plan into action and begin the actual drawing. ...It sounds so time-consuming when I type that all out
3.) On average, how long do you spend on a drawing?
Way. Too. Long. haha Actually, it can be anywhere from a couple days to two weeks. I'm very picky, so I may end up redoing or adjusting the same detail on a drawing several times before I'm satisfied with it. Also, time management has NEVER been my strong point. Just ask my husband
4.) When did you first start drawing, and what made you start to draw in the manga/anime style?
I have been drawing ever since I was a small child. It wasn't until I was about 15-years-old that I began to draw anime though. At that time, anime on American TV was limited to pretty much Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z, but that was enough to get me interested in the art genre. I had always been into comic art, and I loved how slick and stylized anime was... I just had to try drawing it myself Twelve years later, it is my primary art style and I don't foresee that changing
5.) What are your inspirations for drawing?
Mostly Danbooru-style anime imageboards (Gelbooru is my favorite by far ) Yes, a lot of the content is NSFW, but if you can get past that aspect, they are great places to find inspiration. I have discovered many new stylistic and coloring techniques simply by browsing these sites
I'm also heavily influenced by the supernatural. Anyone who looks at my gallery will see that the majority of my characters are anything but human
6.) Do you have any artists that you look up to?
emperpep, demitasse-lover, sachsen, tickledpinky, Teh-Dave, jisuk, sakura-kindness, Kaizeru, and of course, Damaged927
7.) Out of the works in your gallery, what are your five favorite pieces?
Ooh good question. Let's see... I pick these!
8.) Do you have any tips for young aspiring artists?
Practice! Practice! Practice! It's so cliche, but true. No one becomes good at something simply because they want to be. If you want to get good at art, you'll have to work hard at it and practice often.
Also, if you are serious about your art, make sure your work reflects that. If you post drawings that are smudged, blurry, crooked, drawn on notebook paper, or in need of cropping, no one will take you or your art seriously. Take pride in your art. Present it in the neatest, cleanest way possible. After all, if it appears that you don't care about your art, you can't expect anyone else to care about it either
9.) Are there any other types of art that you enjoy?
Cartoons & Comics and Digital art mostly. As for other types of art I enjoy making that would be Artisan Crafts (mostly perler beads and small hair/clothing accessories)
10.) Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Art should always be fun! If you aren't having fun, then you're doing it wrong

June 28th, 2021. I'm nonbinary.
Yo. Its been a while. I accidentally skipped over my 17th anniversary on here. oops. Anyone that knows me, knows that I've played Kingdom Hearts since I was 12 years old, I'm gonna be 31 this year to put that in perspective. When I first played KH, Utada Hikaru's song Simple and Clean struck a cord with me. I loved it. A friend was able to get a burned CD of their songs all the way back in 2002/2003 and I've been drinking the Utada Jpop juice since. I adore their songs, and I can't tell you the amount of times I've cried listening to their music. Their most recent song, Pink Blood came out, and when I saw the video with closed captioning on, and I could understand all of the lyrics instead of picking out certain parts. I fucking cried. Pink Blood is basically an anthem at this point for me. It captures a lot of how I've been feeling for so long. And now, Utada has come out as being nonbinary. I was at work when I learned this, and for some reason had to stop myself from happy
Sweet 16!
So uh, I guess today, June 4th, 2020 marks my 16th anniversary on the site. Who knows where the time went. Now that my account is 16 and I am 29 going on 30, I can safely say that I've had this account for more than half of my life. That's a weird thing to think about. But yeah, seriously. I am an adult. I do adult things. I have a husband. And like, we are starting the process TODAY to buy a house. We reached out to a realtor who we will be talking with this evening about how to do the process. A HOUSE. LIKE, WHO DECIDED THAT I AM ADULT ENOUGH TO GET A HOUSE?! But yeah, wow .I've been here for 16 years. Geeeeeeeeeeeeez. I know that I really haven't been active much at all for several years now, but I still linger in the chats. Hm... some other updates maybe? Well, I'm currently playing Animal Crossing. Its June 27th on my island, which means today is the bug-off, and Flick is here. AND OMG FLICK IS THE MOST PRECIOUS DORK EVER, I LOVE HIM SO MUCH AND WILL DIE FOR HIM.
Getting Married Today!
So, today is September 22nd, 2018. Which means its time for this girl to get hitched! :noes: If you told the 14 year old me who first joined dA, they would've been slapped. *I* wouldn't get married, said teenage me. I aimed to be the worst kind of woman possible to be a giant "fuck you" to the system.
Oops.
That only somewhat happened.
At 5pm EST September 22nd, 2018, I will be married to the Derp of my life. Wish him luck!
30 more days!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAa
AAAAAAAAAFNKJFNAKNJK
SO
There's only 30 days til this gal over here gets married.
T H I R T Y D A Y S
Then I will go from Sam Normandin... to Sam Normandin. I literally just renewed all of my legal documents back in July, I am NOT changing them again. Besides, I like my name. I gotta finish up some of the wedding shit, come up with a seating plan, and kick some booty. Literally, I have an aunt who wants to bring her boyfriend, but he won't know until the day before the wedding if he'll make it. Um, I know my wedding is really informal and all, but this isn't a backyard bbq. That "maybe or maybe not" is $88 to me.

`Miss-It-Girl is made of awesome
And so is this interview! I especially love the advice given on number 8. All of the time I see people posting photos of their artwork and saying, "Ugh, I hate this but I'm going to post it anyways!" If you're not happy with what you did.. then why post it to gain attention? Whatever the case, I think it's an important thing to remember
