Welcome to Traditional Manga/Anime! :squee: This is an article that will be highlighting each section of the traditional art subcategory within Manga/Anime with a little about each category and then some wonderful features for you to enjoy!

Firstly, what is "traditional art"? The Manga/Anime gallery definition is "Traditional manga and anime art created using mediums such as ink, pencil crayons, pastels, paints, markers, and pencils." . There are four traditional art subcategories within the Manga/Anime gallery:

  • Traditional M/A: Drawings
  • Traditional M/A: Paintings
  • Traditional M/A: Manga
  • Traditional M/A: Mixed Media

The official definition: "Traditional manga and anime drawings created using mediums such as ink, pencil crayons, pastels, markers, and pencils."

Manga/Anime drawings are made with a variety of traditional media tools, most common ones are markers, inks, and color pencils. Any drawings made using these medias go under the Traditional Art > Drawings category. Popular markers for Manga/Anime artists tend to be Copic or Prismacolor, they offer the best variety of colors, however both brands of marker are expensive. For color pencils, there are many choices and prismacolor is another popular option, my personal favorites are Derwent Studios. The types of traditional media is limitless, so its best to explore and find what's right for you!

Now, some features to highlight how beautiful Manga/Anime drawings are;

The official definition: Traditional manga and anime paintings created using mediums such as watercolours, oils, tempera, acrylic and paints.

Manga/Anime paintings are most commonly done with traditional paints, however there are color pencils that can also create painted looks. Derwent Water Color pencils are my personal choice if I want to make a water color painting. I can still have the control of a color pencil, but I can create paintings. There are plenty of ways to create traditional paintings, you just need to find out what works best for you. Paint supplies can be bought at many department stores, or art stores if you're looking for something specific. It may take quite a while to get the results you want for painting, but never give up.

There are two subcategories with the digital manga gallery. They are "Pages & Panels" and "Strips". Pages and Panels is, as it sounds, for single manga pages or panels from an original manga page whereas Strips is for manga comic strips.

The official gallery definition of mixed media: "Traditional manga and anime art created using using more than one medium, such as watercolours and pencil, crayons and markers."

Mixed Media is different from what most people think. When they read it, they assume "ok, traditional pieces with digital elements" That's technically incorrect. The mixed media gallery is for drawings that have two different tools within the same media. What does that means? Well, say you made a drawing with markers but you color the background with water colors, that is a mixed media drawing.

Giving traditional art a digital background is not mixed media. At that point it is up to you to decide if your drawing is traditional or digital, and where it should go in either of the galleries.

:squee: That's all for now! Be sure to check out the rest of the Project Educate week to see more articles!
